BARCELONA: IBM will offer telecom operators Verizon and Telefonica new services ranging from operating 5G on a cloud platform to using artificial intelligence, the US tech company said on Monday.

Major technological players such as Microsoft and Amazon are competing for a share of 5G revenues by offering telecom operators next-generation software tools.

IBM, using the technology obtained by purchasing software company Red Hat, will provide carriers with cloud services to manage their networks and help them sell suitable products to customers. No financial terms were disclosed about the mergers, which expanded IBM’s existing partnerships with the two companies.

A cloud platform uses software instead of physical equipment to perform network functions, helping carriers build 5G networks faster, lower costs, and sell personalized services.

“It’s a disruptive time in this particular market segment, telecom operators are trying to position themselves as the destination for services like augmented reality, machine learning and AI,” Darell Jordan- Smith, vice president of Redhat.

On the AI front, IBM and Spain’s Telefonica have created a virtual assistant that they say will remove sticking points, such as long wait times, by automating the processing of frequently asked questions and tasks. like billing.

“We see this as an existential moment for telecom operators with 5G: architecturally, they are looking to better control their platforms and to rethink their network as a digital world rather than a structured physical model,” Steve said. Canepa, Managing Director of IBM. for communication companies.
