The Big Quit 2022 launches a new era of work as job candidates push for more control and remote working

CHICAGO (WLS) — The pandemic has changed things for many people — and for some, it has served as a wake-up call.

The Bureau of Labor tells us that nearly nine million Americans quit their jobs in the last two months of 2021. They are entering an applicant market that has put pressure on employers to compete for the same best talent.

“You have to invest time to create that fun,” said Joe Salas, Founder of ISG. “You have to create that culture and it’s not easy. It’s a transformation. I think it’s a commitment.”

The Great Resignation shapes the future of work.

“People are now saying, ‘Oh, I don’t need to spend eight, nine, ten hours in an office,’ said Charlie Smith, who has changed industries. “I can do the same amount of work and do other things throughout my day.”

As candidates push for more control in the job market, employers need to adjust their approach to keep this talent.

“It could be a different department outside of HR that focuses on how to retain and retain employees,” Salas said.

Creating a special environment becomes even more difficult when many employees no longer come to work in these office buildings. Many of them don’t even work in the same city as some of their colleagues.

“All your gear gets sent to you,” said Caitlin Ramsay, who changed jobs in the tech industry. “You do all of your training on Zoom, and then you just try to build relationships with your teammates that you’ll probably never meet in person.”

“I really like the fact that if we can engage food, music,” Salas said. “You know, it’s fun and it’s more real, especially with the remote control.”

Some companies will eventually bring most employees back to the office, but regardless, the Great Resignation has ushered in a new era of work.

“It will be a very delicate process,” Salas said. “I think we have to accept the fact that remote work is going to be part of our way of life.”
