In the end, it’s not that simple: the package unattended-upgrades, which is available in Debian, Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi OS, and virtually all other Debian-based Linux distributions, is supposed to bring daily updates to already installed software packages without user intervention. However, depending on the distribution, some adjustments are needed to ensure that all updates are actually made.
With Raspberry Pi OS, for example, the configuration adopted from the Debian project does not work, and without adjustments, no packages are updated. On the other hand, not all updates are always desired; Server administrators, for example, are only interested in security updates – they want to check the stability and compatibility of feature updates first, if they are even considering them.
What is common to all distributions is that unattended-upgrades all package sources updated daily after installation. The package that updates the program and then installs differs from distribution to distribution. With Debian and Ubuntu, for example, packages and security updates from the standard distribution are automatically imported. This is specified in the central configuration file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades, but in different ways.
